BatReg² – Battery Cycling and Testing Solutions

High-precision and accurate battery cycling and testing are vital phases in the characterization of modern batteries. The growing need for energy accumulation pushed by the electrification process (e.g. reduction of coal, oil and gas) brings along performance improvements in power devices.

For this reason at CAEN ELS we have developed a dedicated series of battery cyclers and testers that feature high-precision, high-accuracy and configurable testing of battery cells, packs and modules, the BatReg² (Battery Regenerative Regulator).

These power units include a specific polarity detection circuit, an embedded Web-Server, a 100-ksps 24-bit AWG and 4-channel oscilloscope. The output ratings are up to 100 V and ±150 A.

Why the BatReg² series?

All key technologies needed in modern power supplies are part of our DNA. These technologies include the following:

  • digital power control;
  • precise current sensing (0-FLUCS DCCT);
  • regenerative energy handling.

The BatReg² Bidirectional Regenerative High-Precision Digital Battery Cyclers/Testers are a combination of all this know-how. The control of output current and voltage is performed at 100 kHz with a 24-bit resolution in order to obtain the maximum performance.

How does the energy regeneration work?

The high-efficiency in both AC-DC and DC-AC modes is extremely important for consistent energy savings especially when used in large installations. This regenerative architecture allows sending the energy that is fed by the battery to the BatReg² back into the grid during the discharge phase. A scheme of the energy regeneration concept is presented hereafter:

Other features

Temperature-regulated high-precision electronics and the use of our 0-FLUCS technology for current sensing make these power supplies the perfect fit for precise battery testing and cycling. The main applications include battery testing, battery cycling, battery charging and battery simulation.

A trigger input, an analog control input, an extra auxiliary ADC input (16-bit 100 ksps) and a K-type thermocouple input are avariabile as options (code: FB1K5OPT0001) for all models.

An acoustic alarm (buzzer), which can be enabled or disabled in case of fault conditions, is also present on all units and it can be extremely useful when local testing/cycling is performed.

External configurable interlocks, over-voltage and over-current protections among others are also available via the power platform given by the on board SoC (FPGA+CPU) and DSP.

The power supply also has the possibility of communicating using an ASCII-based protocol.
